Back in the GDR: Peeking Under the Iron Curtain is a collaborative exhibition between our Sydney & Berlin galleries, born from a 2012 visit to the German capital by Chairman Michael Reid. A self-confessed & fervent historian, Michael visited a photography exhibition, the first of its kind, a comprehensive survey of photographs from 34 photographers during the German Democratic Republic (1949-1989).
This collection of images, documenting the everyday lives and goings on of East Germans in the GDR, had such a profound effect that Michael & former Berlin Gallery Director Laura Thompson began collecting photographs from the era. Often anonymous photographers capturing personal moments, this assemblage of physical photographs is shared in this online exhibition: ‘Back in the GDR’.
